Dreams and Dances

Performing composers Alisa Rose and Monica Chew present a diverse selection of new works for violin and piano, playfully juxtaposing moments of lively movement with those of lush stillness.

Join composer performers Monica Chew and Alisa Rose for a collaborative concert of energetic dances tempered by lush and dreamy interludes. “Dreams and Dances” features a diverse selection of new works for violin and piano, playfully juxtaposing moments of movement and stillness. Paul Schoenfield’s Country Fiddle Tunes, “Pining for Betsy” and “Who let the Cat Out,” merge popular, folk, and classical music forms into a frenetic yet polished display of virtuosity. Oliver Messiaen’s majestic Theme and Variations celebrates love in its expressive winding and intertwining melodies, while local composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s Sueños de Chambi: Snapshots for an Andean Album, offer creative interpretations of indigenous Peruvian soundscapes. Rose and Chew will premiere their own new compositions inspired by the contrast between motion and stillness explored throughout the program.
